Anti-wrinkle injections – using Botulinum Toxin Type 'A'

What is Botulinum Toxin?

Prescription only.....an injectable medicine that temporarily blocks the nerve impulses of treated muscles, therefore preventing contraction. This results in a smoothed appearance to lines and wrinkles.

Areas typically treated are 'crow's feet lines' (around eyes), 'forehead lines', and 'frown lines'.

Is Botulinum Toxin safe?

Botulinum Toxin has been used for over 20 years in the cosmetic industry, with very few side effects and minimal contraindications for its use.  It is a prescription only medication, and has been through years of extensive research

Botulinum toxin is also used in the medical setting for certain eye conditions, migraines, and to help reduce muscle over activity and stiffness in conditions such a s cerebral palsy.

What is involved in the procedure?

Your skin will be cleaned with a special anti-microbial solution. Sally will then ask you to make specific expressions with your face – frown, smile, raise eyebrows. Small pencil marks will then be made on your face to ensure correct injection points.

Very small doses of botulinum toxin will then be injected into the marked areas. The needle used is very small, and patients usually experience minimal discomfort.

Immediately following treatment, there will be evidence of injections, with small raised, red lumps. These generally fade within 30 minutes. Aftercare advice will be provided.

When will I see results?

Results can be seen as early as 3-5 days, with best results by day 14.

Depending on your request and discussion at consultation, results can be subtle, to allow some movement or expression, or more severe with minimal or no movement.

How long does the treatment last?

Typically 3-6 months depending on the individual.  Age, skin type and lifestyle can all be influencing factors.

Are there side effects?

As with any medicine, there is a possibility of side effects in some patients. However, many patients experience minimal or no side effects. Common side effects are bruising, swelling, redness, pain, stinging, burning. These are all related to the injection and are temporary.

Headache, skin redness, local muscle weakness, twitching and drooping of the eye can occur.

Some patients may not respond to the treatment, in which case a different brand may be recommended at your next treatment.
